Gas Tax Agreement
In 2005, British Columbia became the first province in Canada to sign an
agreement with the federal government to transfer gas tax revenues to B.C.
cities and communities. The Gas Tax Agreement is between the governments
of Canada and
British Columbia and the Union of British Columbia
Municipalities (UBCM). The agreement details how the gas tax funds will be used in the province to support environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure. On March 17, 2008, British Columbia, the Government of Canada and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities signed an agreement to extend
the Gas Tax Agreement for four years between 2010 and 2014. The extension will provide approximately $1 billion in additional funding for
environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure.
