PROVINCE ANNOUNCES MORE SUPPORTS FOR THE HOMELESS

SURREY The federal and provincial governments will provide $20.8 million for projects in Victoria, Kelowna, New Westminster, Prince George, Terrace and Fort St. John. New developments will provide support services such as counselling, treatment for mental health and addictions and services that link people to job training and stable employ employment.  Read the March 30 news release.

The second phase announcement of the Premier's Task Force on Homelessness, Mental Illness and Addictions celebrated eight new transitional housing developments to help people break free from the cycle of homelessness. This announcement was made at the official groundbreaking of the Phoenix Centre in Surrey, the first development to break ground of the four developments announced in December as part of the Premier's Task Force on Homelessness, Mental Illness and Addictions.

Pictured at the groundbreaking ceremony are, [left to right]: Senator Jack Austin; Murray Coell, Minister of Community, Aboriginal and Women's Services; Brenda Locke, Minister of State of Mental Health and Addictions Services; Roy Dickey, Board Chair of the Phoenix Drug and Alcohol Recovery and Education Society; and Michael Wilson, Executive Director, Phoenix Drug and Alcohol Recovery and Education Society.
