Stopping The Violence

  Community Action for Women's Safety

Introduction

The Province of British Columbia is helping communities respond to women's safety issues by supporting projects that help women live free from domestic violence and feel safe in their communities.

Funding

In March 2006, the Province provided $1 million in funding with its  Community Action for Women's Safety Grants to help community organizations reduce violence and increase safety for women. Fifty-two organizations in more than 70 B.C. communities received funding.

September Symposium

In September 2006, the Hon. Ida Chong, Minister of Community Services and Minister Responsible for Women's Issues, hosted a symposium in Vancouver and invited grant recipients and other interested parties to share promising practices and hear the outcomes from some of the projects. The Minister and senior ministry staff joined the 80 participants at the day-long event.

Community Guide

One of the products of the Community Action for Women's Safety initiative is the 32-page community guide.

Background

In January 2006, the Ministry of Community Services issued an invitation to communities to apply for funding.

To help women most at risk of violence, priority was given to projects which address safety for Aboriginal women; immigrant and visible minority women; older women; and women with disabilities.
